Freshmen Emerging Leaders Program (FELP)

What is FELP?

The Freshmen Emerging Leaders Program (FELP) is an introductory leadership course aimed at introducing freshmen to fundamental leadership concepts. Guided activities help students to not only recognize and/or clarify their values, but also understand how they interact within diverse contexts. Some of these activities include: Strengths Quest, “This I Believe” essays, a student/staff led resource information panel, and complementary readings. Facilitators and freshmen collaborate to personalize the FELP experience during either the winter or spring quarter. At the end of the eight-week program, students are equipped to apply their leadership insights to groups/organizations on campus and in the community. This year, students will be encouraged to think and apply ‘empathic leadership’; leaders who lead from the inside-out.

What is the Freshmen Emerging Leaders Program?

FELP is an eight-week seminar held during Winter Quarter focused on the development of emerging student leaders at Northwestern. Our mission is to foster the further development of Northwestern first-year students’ demonstrated leadership abilities, while networking with other emerging leaders from across campus. Our alumni are active participants in many aspects of the Northwestern community.

Who participates in FELP?

Each year, five percent of the freshmen class is nominated by student affairs professionals and other Northwestern leaders. Freshmen may nominate themselves. Students join to further develop demonstrated leadership abilities, while networking with a diverse group of emerging leaders, as well as with amazing facilitators, across campus. Our alumni are active participants in many aspects of the Northwestern and Evanston community.
