The following is only a suggested timeline. It is something to consult as you plan your leadership career at Northwestern. Download a PDF copy.
 
Freshman Year | Sophomore Year | Junior Year | Senior Year
 
Freshmen Year
Before Fall Quarter
Participate in one of NU’s Pre-New Student Week programs/Leadership Development Programs:
 
Fall Quarter
  • Attend the Activities Fair at Norris during the first week of school.
  • Attend an open meeting for one of the many student groups on campus and sign up to be involved. Some groups might have open board positions or positions just for freshmen.
  • Sign up for the Freshman Emerging Leaders Program or Freshman Class Council
  • Sit in and listen to an ASG Senate meeting (7:00 p.m. Wednesday nights, Northwestern Room, Norris University Center)
 
Winter Quarter
  • Attend Women in Leadership
  • Check Recruitment for Fraternity/Sorority Life
  • Click here to learn about leadership opportunities that are compensated
  • Many student groups have elections at the end of winter quarter. If there is a group you’ve been involved in see if there will be an open position on the board.

 
Spring Quarter

Sophomore Year
It is important to make sure you don’t have too much on your plate. The beginning of Fall quarter is good time to map out all of your commitments.
 
Before Fall Quarter
Be a counselor for one of NU’s Pre-New Student Week/Leadership Development Programs
 
Fall Quarter
  • Look into running for a position on ASG
  • Attend a conferences/lecture on campus (Woman in the Leadership/Diversity Conference/Medill Speaker Series/Greek Emerging Leaders Program, that you find interesting.

  • Find out about Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Program and Leadershape.
 
Winter Quarter
Ok, burnout could be near. It is important to prioritize all of you commitments.
  • If you haven’t been involved with one of the Leadership Groups, check out the different opportunities
  • Click here to learn about leadership opportunities in the Office of Residential Life.
  • Run for a board position, or if you are all already on the board of student organization/fraternity/sorority consider running for a higher position. Consider running for a position in a different student organization instead.
 
Spring Quarter
  • Run for a board position, or if you are all already on the board of student organization/fraternity/sorority consider running for a higher position. Consider running for a position in a different student organization instead.
  • Attend a conferences/lecture on campus (Woman in the Leadership/Diversity Conference/Medill Speaker Series) that you find interesting.

Junior Year
As a junior you might be running a student organization, serving as a 2nd year Senator on ASG, or getting more involved in a fraternity/sorority or student organization. You have a lot to share the with campus community.
 
Before Fall Quarter
Be a counselor for one of NU’s Orientation/Leadership Building Programs
 
Fall Quarter
  • If you have attended any of the campus conferences/leadership building programs (provide a link to such programs) then help plan/coordinate one of these conferences/programs.
  • If you’re a CA think about being an RHC or SCA .

 
Winter Quarter
  • If you haven’t been involved with any of the Leadership Groups, check out the different opportunities

  • Run for a board position, or if you are all already on the board of student organization/fraternity/sorority consider running for a higher position. Consider running for a position in a different student organization instead.
 
Spring Quarter

Senior Year
The beginning of the end of your undergraduate career at Northwestern. This is the year to leave your mark. It’s important to continue to have a positive attitude towards student leadership. This is a year for reflection, rewards, and seeking out others to continue your hard work.
 
Before Fall Quarter
Be a counselor for one of NU’s Orientation/Leadership Building Programs
 
Fall/Winter/Spring
  • Identify freshmen student leaders and take them under your wing and help them make thoughtful decisions.
  • Look for awards to apply for based on leadership experiences.
  • In addition to planning conferences and programs, serve as a resource at the events.
