Jackie Azpeitia
Since my freshman year, I have committed myself to a wide variety
of programs and
organizations, aiming to excel in educational, cultural, and community
enriching areas. I have
been involved with the Summer Academic Workshop for the past 4 years,
first as a participant
and currently as the Student Coordinator for Student Affairs and
Co-Head Counselor. During my
time here at Northwestern, I have dedicated my time and service
to the following organizations:
Alianza, Caribnation, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., and
WNUR. Of these, I have grown
the most from my involvement with my sorority, Lambda Theta Alpha
– Beta Psi Chapter. I have
had the fortune to have served as LTA’s President, Vice-President,
Academic Chair, Multicultural
Greek Council Representative, and Fundraising Chair since my initiation
2 ½ years ago. More
importantly, through my commitment with Lambda Theta Alpha, I have
had the opportunity
to impact several communities by volunteering at the annual Evanston
Hispanic Youth Awards,
the Special Olympics, Jonquil Children’s Center and Saint
Nichol’s after school drop-in center,
helping organize NU’s “Stop the Hate” Rally, and
sending letters of support to U.S. troops in Iraq. |

year and helped teach the social-change model of leadership to
incoming freshmen interested pursuing leadership positions at
Northwestern. Noora came to Northwestern with 9 years of student
government experience, during which she was president 4 times,
had attended 8 leadership conferences in Bahrain and Germany and
organized two others, and was honored with the Medal for International

• Samir Mayekar
One of the most important lessons I have learned at Northwestern
is that activities outside the classroom matter just as much as
work done inside the classroom. Since arriving on campus, I have
become involved in several organizations, from musical groups such
as the Marching Band and Boomshaka to all-campus groups such as
Student Government and my fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. Specifically,
my experiences in Beta have helped provide a foundation for success
in other organizations. Winning Beta scholarships allowed me to
participate in two Greek summer leadership institutes, where I learned
the importance of ethical decision making, positive change, and
a commitment to community service. Such values have helped me represent
my chapter through leadership positions in several campus groups
and membership in two academic honors societies. Additionally, I
have volunteered at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Facility
and participated in Dance Marathon, both service opportunities made
possible with the assistance of Beta. After participating in the
Freshman Emerging Leaders Program and the Leadership Advisory Board
Retreat, I gained additional resources which enhanced my leadership
capabilities. I highly encourage emerging leaders to take advantage
of these and the many leadership opportunities offered through the
Center for Student Involvement, because they can serve as a springboard
to becoming a campus leader. |

• Sarah
McCracken
Soon after joining her sorority, Sarah was elected as a chapter
chairman. She immediately implemented several ideas into the chapter’s
quarterly fundraising events, still in effect today. Sophomore year
she was elected President and challenged her executive board and
chapter to expand and improve every aspect of the sorority. During
her term, her chapter won several campus and national Greek awards.
She was the Outstanding Sorority President for 2004. Last December,
Panhellenic delegates elected her the new Panhellenic Vice President
of Membership. In the summer of 2004, she attended the Undergraduate
Interfraternity Institute (UIFI). Fall quarter, she will TA the
Emerging Greek Leadership program. She has led multiple panels and
seminars, helping new and current Greek leaders improve their chapters
through values-based actions. |
