Leadership Programs
Leadership development programs at Northwestern University aim to provide students with experiential and reflective opportunities to develop the values, knowledge, critical thinking and interpersonal skills necessary to become engaged citizens and responsible leaders. Students are encouraged to explore topics ranging from social responsibility to understanding one's personal leadership style in order to become leaders who make assertive and effective decisions. Why Get Involved? This site was designed to help you not only learn more about the opportunities at Northwestern University, but more importantly to enhance your college experience. Research shows that college students who get involved in at least one area outside of their academics in college have a better experience and will generally do better in college. What will you do to make this happen?
 
Why Leadership? Holding a leadership position gives you the opportunity to put in practice what you are learning, gives you insight into human relationships, and affords you an experience that you wouldn't necessarily get as a member of a group.

Why is leadership important?

Leadership is important for many reasons. Primarily, serving as a leader will enrich your college experience in unique ways such as meeting a diverse set of students to making changes on campus happen.   Moreover, the university community depends upon strong student leaders to continue and improve the events and programs which make the NU experience enriching and rewarding.
 
How can I become a student leader?

The first step is to take initiative. Attend a conference, join a student group, ask questions to friends involved on campus, or stop by the Center for Student Involvement. The second step is to reflect on your experiences in order to better understand what future programs may interest you. Finally, always be sure to seek out other ways of staying involved.
 
What kinds of leadership opportunities are available at NU?

There are countless opportunities to become a leader at NU. The best way to determine what opportunity would be the right match is to ask yourself some of the following questions: What you are passionate about? What do you like doing? What do you want to learn more about? What do you need to improve upon?
 
What if I am not a natural leader?

Some people are good leaders by nature. However, most people have to work hard and experience failures before becoming good leaders. It takes dedication, discipline, and self-evaluation to be a good leader. Leaders make mistakes, take risks, and even fail at times. Leadership is a process.
