The Student Recognition Banquet's 17 awards recognize excellence in five categories:

 
  • 1-3: Leadership
  • 4-5: Community Service
  • 6-9: Theatrical & Performing Arts
  • 10-14: Student Organizations
  • 15-17: Advisors, Staff, & Student Employees

Below, you will find a description of each award and specific criteria by which judges will evaluate nominees.   In your nomination letter, please describe how your nominee meets each criteria listed.

 
1) Emerging Student Leader Award (one male, one female)

Awarded to freshman or sophomore not currently holding an executive board position in a student, community, or work organization that demonstrates tremendous leadership potential on or off campus.

  • extracurricular involvement at Northwestern
  • demonstrated awareness of beliefs, values, attitudes, and emotions
  • commitment to an organization, community group, or work environment
 
2) Leadership Scholarship

Awarded to sophomore or junior who will serve in a significant leadership or supervisory position in the coming year.   Scholarship is for one Kaplan course of the recipient's choice.

  • extracurricular involvement at Northwestern
  • award's benefit to student
  • balance between academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and personal well being
  • demonstrated commitment through involvement
 
3) Highest Order of Excellence Society (Seniors Only)

Awarded to 3-5 senior or graduate students who have displayed outstanding leadership through involvement at Northwestern.

  • approach to empowering others
  • congruence in convictions and morals when leading
  • capitalizing on different talents and perspectives of group members to invoke innovative ideas
 
4) Outstanding Community Service Event

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student organization that conducted an outstanding one-time community service event on or off campus.  

  • detailed event description
  • impact on community and/or participants
  • advancement of organization's mission and goals
 
5) Outstanding Community Service On-going Program

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student organization that conducts an outstanding on-going community service program on or off campus.

  • detailed program description
  • impact on community and/or participants
  • advancement of organization's mission and goals
  • on-going commitment to community
 
6) Outstanding Theatrical Production

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student organization that has produced an outstanding theatrical production.

  • detailed production description
  • effective and efficient use of resources
  • uniqueness relative to other campus theatrical productions
 
7) Outstanding Performing Arts Production

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate organization that has produced an outstanding performing arts production (non-theater: a capella, dance, etc.).

  • uniqueness relative to other campus performing arts productions
 
8) Outstanding Director(s)

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student for directorial efforts on a theatrical/performing arts production.

  • detailed production description
  • leadership abilities, vision, and commitment to production's success
  • unique approach to direction and impact on performers, performance, and audience
 
9) Outstanding Producer(s)

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student for efforts as a producer/production team on a theatrical/performing arts production.

  • roles, responsibilities, and individual impact of nominee(s)
  • resource maximization, unique contribution to production's success
  • effort and dedication to production
 
10) Excellence in Diversity Programming

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student organization that has displayed exceptional awareness of cultural diversity through innovative programming efforts.

  • commitment to diversity education
  • advancement of mission and goals through programming
  • description of diversity programming
  • short- and long-term impact on Northwestern community
 
11) Outstanding Graduate Student Organization

Awarded to a graduate or professional student organization that has demonstrated, through programming, a commitment to embracing and improving the Northwestern community.

  • examples of dedication to effecting change and community-building among graduate/professional students
  • detailed events, programs, and/or services that promote professional development
  • member collaboration toward shard aims, values, and goals
 
12) Outstanding Collaborative Effort Award

Awarded to undergraduate or graduate student organizations that have committed to working effectively with other students/organizations and have successfully planned a collaborative event.

  • detailed description of collaboration to design successful event
  • effective utilization of each groups' strengths, talents, and perspective
  • innovativeness and success of event
 
13) Outstanding New Student Organization

Awarded to a new (existing no more than two years) undergraduate or graduate student organization that has demonstrated outstanding potential toward improving the Northwestern community.

  • fulfills unique need or interest
  • detailed events, programs, and/or services sponsored by organization
  • effective overcoming of challenges faced as new organization
 
14) Outstanding Undergraduate Student Organization

Awarded to an undergraduate student organization or group that has demonstrated outstanding commitment to embracing and improving the Northwestern community.

  • commitment to Northwestern community as a whole
  • detailed events, programs, and/or services sponsored or co-sponsored by organization that benefit the   Northwestern community
  • described affection of change on campus
 
15) Outstanding Advisor Award

Awarded to a professional staff or faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment as a student organization advisor.

  • examples of providing exemplary assistance to a student organization
  • encouragement of students' growth through personal interaction with students/group
  • consistent genuineness, authenticity, and honesty in commitment to student organization(s)
 
16) Dorothy R. Brooks Morgan Outstanding Support Staff Award

Awarded to a professional staff member or administrator who demonstrates a continued commitment to supporting students or student organizations.   This award was renamed on February 4, 2008 in honor of Dorothy R. Brooks Morgan.   Dorothy worked at the Norris Center for Student Involvement for six years and was the recipient of this award in 2003-2004.   Dorothy embodied the sentiment that this award recognizes and her commitment will be commemorated with each year's presentation of this award.

17) Student Employee of the Year

Awarded to a Norris student employee who has made an outstanding contribution through his/her position.

  • consistent genuineness, authenticity, and honesty in commitment to performing responsibilities
